Just Make a Mark – Why The Dot Book Aligns with the S&S Mission

When we first encountered The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds, it struck a chord with our team at S&S Worldwide. The story is simple, yet powerful: a young girl named Vashti doesn’t believe she can draw – until an encouraging teacher invites her to make just one mark on a blank page. That small gesture opens the door to self-expression, confidence, and discovery.

It’s a reminder that creativity doesn’t require perfection, it starts with a willingness to try.

That message aligns beautifully with our mission at S&S Worldwide. For generations, we’ve provided supplies and support for educators, afterschool programs, camps, and community organizations. But what we’re really doing is creating opportunities for children to explore, grow, and express themselves. We believe in the power of creativity to unlock confidence and connection.

Our Co-CEO Hy felt this message deeply.

“It’s amazing how one small act, like making a dot, can open up a whole world of creativity for a child,” said Hy Schwartz. “We serve so many programs that nurture kids through arts, education, and play. The Dot reminded me how essential it is to give kids permission to take that first step.”

Inspired by the growing movement around International Dot Day, we decided to make it even easier for educators and youth leaders to bring the story’s message to life. Our exclusive Dot Day Activity Pack was designed with that goal in mind – offering enough materials for over 100 children to explore their creativity through open-ended art projects. It’s not about getting it “right,” but about making space for imagination and personal expression. The pack contains enough supplies to make over 300 individual pieces of art!

We’re also grateful to collaborate with Paul Reynolds, Co-CEO of FableVision and the Reynolds Center for Teaching, Learning & Creativity. As the brother of The Dot’s author, Peter H. Reynolds, Paul continues to champion creative education alongside his brother’s work. Their shared vision of empowering kids through storytelling and meaningful learning aligns perfectly with the values we hold dear.

At S&S Worldwide, we believe every child has something unique to share. Sometimes, all they need is a little encouragement – and a blank canvas!
