Recognize the changing of the seasons with your residents by providing fun activities that highlight the upcoming season either on the eve or on the day of the solstice. Include these seasonal activities in your residents’ favorite types of activities, like arts and crafts activities, reminiscing activities, and even musical activities.
Arts and Crafts Activities
Supply residents with coloring pages of the different seasons to fill in with markers or colored pencils. Then have residents frame the finished artwork for hanging in their room.
Reminiscing Activities
Play DVDs of each season to reminisce with residents about what they enjoy doing during that time of year. Add a sensory component to the activity by serving a snack that fits the season, like pumpkin cookies for fall, hot cocoa for winter, lemon cookies for spring, and watermelon for summer.
Musical Activities
Invite residents to join in with a sing along that includes songs about the seasons. For instance, lead residents in singing “April Showers” in spring, “America the Beautiful” in the summer, “Shine On Harvest Moon” in autumn, and “Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!” in winter. Pass out musical instruments, including cymbals and jingle bells, for residents to play while singing.
