In our program, we are having a “Flashback to the 80’s” Summer Session in June. At the event, we do craft activities and also provide accessories and activities like fanny packs, cassette tapes, twister, Nintendo and anything neon that glows! This abstract craft project was a fun way to showcase the 80’s with neon color. The paint also glows in the blacklight!
You can use paint only, or add different neon colored items on your canvas to decorate, including beads, felt, and shoelaces.
Materials:
- Canvas Panels
- Neon (Fluorescent) Paint
- Paintbrush
- Paint Cups
- Art Tray (durable trays or flexible plastic)
- Blacklight
- Carboard / foam piece for spreading paint

Step 1:
You can choose to paint your canvas to have a base color or keep it white. In this example, we painted the canvas blue for a background color. Remember there is no wrong way to create in Art. Your creations will be as unique as you are.
Step 2.
It’s fun to use items that you already have around but you don’t normally think to use for painting. What can you find around your home that you could use? Using a paint brush, Q-tip, craft stick, or even your finger, add some dabs of paint that you wish to have.
Step 3:
We used foam squares to create our designs. You may use any object you wish including a piece of cardboard, a comb, or even your hand. We started on one end of the canvas and simply swiped the foam square to the other side. Then we picked up the square and started over, making sure to continue to swipe the same direction. Once that layer is dry, you can add another layer of paint.
Step 4:
Now you can start layering your canvas with any objects you wish. We chose all items that are Neon so they would glow in the blacklight.
Step 5:
We stacked our Neon building blocks on top of each other to add dimension to our canvas. These Neon shoelaces also glow in the dark so we cut some and glued those on as well. You can add your neon straws, fuse beads, or just keep painting.
Step 6:
Once you’re finished creating your fabulous Abstract Art, now grab your blacklight flashlight and head to a dark space. Turn on your blacklight and watch your creation Glow!
