I volunteer every other week to lead the Preschool storytime. Coming up with fun crafts to go along with the theme is always fun. There are many variations of this craft. You can even use the finished products as puppets, which is a fun idea. After a great storytime with books and songs about families and a silly puppet, we explained the idea for the craft to the moms and kids.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Materials:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/item\/white-tagboard-EC3343\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tagboard<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/arts-and-crafts-supplies\/wood-crafts\/craft-sticks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Craft sticks<\/a> (The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/item\/jumbo-craft-sticks-CS700\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">jumbo size<\/a> is better for people, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/item\/budget-craft-sticks-CS425\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">regular size<\/a> for animals)<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/arts-and-crafts-supplies\/drawing-supplies\/markers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Markers<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/arts-and-crafts-supplies\/craft-trims\/wiggly-eyes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wiggly eyes<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/item\/fabric-mosaic-squares-FA3402\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fabric scraps<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/arts-and-crafts-supplies\/knitting-and-crocheting\/yarn\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Yarn<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/item\/jute-macrame-string-ply-MA46NA\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jute rope<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/item\/bag-ribbon-FA3236\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ribbon<\/a> for hair<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/item\/aleenes-tacky-glue-GL422C\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tacky glue<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/arts-and-crafts-supplies\/craft-tools\/scissors\/kids-scissors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Scissors<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>How to Make Craft Stick Families<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>All of the supplies for this craft project were laid out on a large table in our conference room at the library. We found it best to have the kids stand, as it allowed them to have more room to create and have access to the supplies.<\/p>\n<p>We told them they were going to make the craft sticks into their own family, including pets if they wished. The jumbo crafts sticks were used for the people, and the pets were created using smaller craft sticks cut in pieces and decorated like their pets. All of our preschoolers who come to storytime have a parent or caregiver that attends, and generally they assist their own child with crafts as needed.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-10132\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/craftstickfamilies1.jpg\" alt=\"craft stick families\" width=\"540\" height=\"540\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It was rewarding to see the parents and children creating the members of their families and discussing their features or ways to make them look silly. Parents seemed to have as much fun as the children!<\/p>\n<p>This craft was a huge success and turned out so much better than I&#8217;d even expected. The opportunity for exercising a child&#8217;s creativity for this craft is really off the charts, and it is also a great activity for hand-eye coordination for preschoolers. Adults helped brainstorm clothing and decorating ideas with their younger kids, and many of them assisted with the cutting of fabric scraps for clothes.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-10130\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/library-storytime1.png\" alt=\"library storytime\" width=\"540\" height=\"406\" \/><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Family Storytime Resources<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Books:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What!
