Soon he discovers the joy of using letters to make words and reading stories all by himself!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Recommended Ages: Grades 1 &#8211; 2<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Activity 1<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Gather the class on the rug to introduce How Rocket Learned to Read. As a whole class do a picture walk of the story. The teacher can model how to do a picture walk or students can volunteer to say what they notice about the pictures.<\/li>\n<li>During the picture walk, introduce new vocabulary such as marvel and captivated. Write the new words on chart paper.<\/li>\n<li>After the picture walk, read the story to the class.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Materials<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">How Rocket Learned to Read<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/search\/index.php?q=Ruled+Chart+Tablet+24%E2%80%9Dx32%E2%80%9D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ruled Chart Tablet 24\u201dx32\u201d<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/arts-and-crafts-supplies\/drawing-supplies\/markers\/washable-markers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Washable Markers<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong>Activity 2<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The next day, re-read the book to the whole class.<\/li>\n<li>After reading, make a list of some of the sight words that were in the story.<\/li>\n<li>Explain to the students that they will be practicing their sight words in a center or with a partner. Use sight word cards and a dog bowl to practice reading words. Words the student can read go into the dog bowl to \u201cfeed\u201d the puppy. Students can challenge themselves to see how much they can feed the puppy!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Materials<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">How Rocket Learned to Read<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/item\/ruled-index-cards-OC1008\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">3 x 5 Ruled Index Cards<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/arts-and-crafts-supplies\/drawing-supplies\/markers\/washable-markers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Washable Markers<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Dog Bowl or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/item\/sorting-bowls-LR2854\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">regular bowls<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Activity 3<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>At another center, students can practice sight words using Play Doh to make the words.<\/li>\n<li>Students could use the pile of words they are still working on, that haven\u2019t made it to the dog bowl yet, for extra practice.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Materials<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/item\/ruled-index-cards-OC1008\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">3 x 5 Ruled Index Cards<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/item\/play-doh-rainbow-starter-pack-SL8347\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Play-Doh Rainbow Starter Pack<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Activity 4<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Gather the class together to reread How Rocket Learned to Read, one more time.<\/li>\n<li>Ask the students to point out words that describe feelings as the teacher reads. Record the words on chart paper. As words are added to the chart, point out that some might be words they learned about the first time the teacher read the book.<\/li>\n<li>After reading have a discussion about how Rocket was feeling as he was learning to read. Students can \u201cturn and talk\u201d to peers and then share their thoughts<\/li>\n<li>Finally, students will do an interview about learning to read.
