Expand the soil pellets by adding 1 cup of water for each pellet. Wait for expansion to occur. You may want to add more water if the soil is too dry.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"noborder alignright wp-image-12020\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/marigold1.png\" alt=\"flower garden kit\" width=\"300\" height=\"432\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Participants:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Paint a design on the outside of the plastic pot. Let dry completely.<\/li>\n<li>Fill the pots 1\/2 way with soil. Water soil so it is damp.<\/li>\n<li>Plant 2 to 3 seeds 1\/4 inch deep in soil.<\/li>\n<li>Measure and cut a piece of plastic wrap about 5 x 5 inches. Place plastic wrap over the top of\u00a0each pot. Secure in place with a rubber band.<\/li>\n<li>Place pots on windowsill with partial sunlight. Remove the rubber band and plastic wrap after\u00a0the seeds have begun to sprout (about 5-6 days). Keep soil moist.<\/li>\n<li>When plants are 1 inch tall, place pots in direct sunlight. Turn pots a little each day so the flowers receive equal sunlight. Keep the soil slightly damp at all times.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>If you want this to be a 2 day project, have participants do Step 1 on the first day. Then follow the remainder of the instructions on the second day.<\/p>\n<p><strong>NOTE:<\/strong> Marigolds can be grown indoors year round, but they thrive in warm, sunny locations. You may want to place them outdoors in the summer months.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"font-size: 125%; text-align: center;\">Educational Lesson Plans<\/h2>\n<p>Enhance your kids&#8217; knowledge about plants and growing while also strenthening their skills in subjects like Science, Language Arts, Writing, and Math. Have the students draw a\u00a0similar picture to the diagram. It is important to get at least five\u00a0or six different seeds. Seeds that are different sizes\u00a0and colors are easier for the students to describe.\u00a0Have the students orally describe each seed\u2019s<br \/>\ncharacteristics and look through a magnifying lens.\u00a0Record the students\u2019 observations on the chart paper.\u00a0Have the students write descriptive paragraphs about\u00a0a particular seed without saying the seed\u2019s name.\u00a0When read to the class, see if the other students can\u00a0identify which seed is being described.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"font-size: 115%; text-align: center;\">Language Arts<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Objective:<\/strong> Write a descriptive poem about\u00a0flowers.<br \/>\n<strong>Suggestesd Time Frame:<\/strong> 35-40 minutes<br \/>\n<strong>Additional Materials:<\/strong> writing paper<\/p>\n<p><strong>Procedure:<\/strong> Brainstorm with the students a list\u00a0of words that best describe the flower. Encourage\u00a0the students to think about color, shape, and\u00a0height when describing the flower. Make a list\u00a0of words on the board for the students to use\u00a0in their poems. The teacher may decide on a\u00a0specific poetry style (for example: shape, name,\u00a0limerick \u2013 a five line funny poem with lines 1, 2\u00a0and 5 rhyming and lines 3 and 4 rhyming, Haiku<br \/>\n\u2013 three line poem with 5 syllables in the first and\u00a0last line and 7 syllables in the middle line). Have\u00a0the students work in groups of three or four when\u00a0writing the poem. When the poem is written, make\u00a0a picture illustrating the poem.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"font-size: 115%; text-align: center;\">Arts<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Objective:<\/strong> Illustrate the growth of the flower\u00a0using a variety of materials once a week for four\u00a0weeks.<br \/>\n<strong>Suggested Time Frame:<\/strong> 30 minutes (once a\u00a0week for four weeks)<br \/>\n<strong>Additional Materials:<\/strong> drawing paper, crayons,\u00a0colored pencils, watercolors, chalk, tissue paper,\u00a0chenille stems, felt, glitter, glue<\/p>\n<p><strong>Procedure:<\/strong> While looking at the marigolds, have\u00a0the students illustrate their flower on paper using\u00a0a variety of tactile materials. Have the students\u00a0feel the petals and leaves to try to reproduce those\u00a0textures on the paper. The illustration should be\u00a0similar in size to the real flower. Label each page\u00a0with the date and put the pages together to make<br \/>\na chronological book of the marigold\u2019s growth. A\u00a0cover can be make with the title \u201cThe Growth of a\u00a0Marigold.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"font-size: 115%; text-align: center;\">Arts &amp; Writing<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Objective:<\/strong> Make leaf and petal rubbings.<br \/>\n<strong>Suggested Time Frame:<\/strong> 30 minutes<br \/>\n<strong>Additional Materials:<\/strong> paper, crayons without\u00a0paper.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Procedure:<\/strong> Carefully remove a few leaves and\u00a0marigold petals from the plant. Have the students\u00a0place the leaves and\/or petals in a design on the\u00a0table and place the paper carefully on top. Using\u00a0the side of a crayon (without the paper wrapping),\u00a0gently rub over the paper. The students can use\u00a0different color crayons and different petals and\/or<br \/>\nleaves to create a variety of designs. When the\u00a0rubbings are completed, the children can add any\u00a0other drawings to their paper. At the bottom of\u00a0the paper, leave space for the students to write a\u00a0sentence about their picture.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"font-size: 115%; text-align: center;\">Spelling &amp; Writing<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Objective:<\/strong> Identify words beginning with f (flower) or\u00a0m (marigold).<br \/>\n<strong>Suggested Time Frame:<\/strong> 30 minutes<br \/>\n<strong>Additional Materials:<\/strong> chart paper, writing paper<\/p>\n<p><strong>Procedure:<\/strong> Prior to the lesson, decide which letter\u00a0(f for flower or m for marigold) the students will use.\u00a0Brainstorm with the students lists of words beginning\u00a0with f or m. Write the list of words on the chart paper.\u00a0Encourage the students to come up with words that\u00a0are nouns (people, places, and things), verbs (shows\u00a0action) and adjectives (descriptive words). Have the\u00a0students put words together to write silly sentences.<br \/>\nIllustrate the sentence.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-12028\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/flower-sentences1.png\" alt=\"garden for classroom\" width=\"500\" height=\"371\" \/><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"font-size: 115%; text-align: center;\">Math<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Activity 1: <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Objective:<\/strong> Count the number of leaves in one pot\u00a0and record the findings on a class graph.<br \/>\n<strong>Suggested Time Frame:<\/strong> 20 minutes<br \/>\n<strong>Additonal Materials:<\/strong> graph paper, markers<\/p>\n<p><strong>Procedure:<\/strong> On a large piece of graph paper,\u00a0draw a graph with the title: LOTS OF LEAVES and\u00a0the labels \u201cnumber of leaves\u201d and \u201cstudent names.\u201d\u00a0Have the students carefully count the number of\u00a0leaves in their pot. When recording the findings\u00a0on the chart, help the students find their name\u00a0and color up to the correct number. When all the<br \/>\nstudents have filled in their column on the chart,\u00a0they can compare which pot has the most or the\u00a0least number of leaves.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Activity 2:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Objective:<\/strong> Develop a prediction chart based on\u00a0the growth of the marigold.<br \/>\n<strong>Suggested Time Frame:<\/strong> 30 minutes<br \/>\n<strong>Additonal Materials:<\/strong> paper<\/p>\n<p><strong>Procedure:<\/strong> Brainstorm with the students\u00a0to develop questions that they would like to<br \/>\nknow about the flower\u2019s growth. Some example\u00a0questions could be: How many days will it take for\u00a0the first leaves to grow? How many leaves will be\u00a0on one flower? What color will my flower be? Have\u00a0each student write these questions on a piece of\u00a0paper. On the right hand side of the paper, leave\u00a0space for the students to write their predictions<br \/>\nand a space for the actual response. Have each\u00a0student record their predictions then find the\u00a0actual response. Some actual responses might not\u00a0be able to be recorded for a few weeks.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-12026\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/flower-graph1.png\" alt=\"flower garden classroom\" width=\"500\" height=\"325\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This activity can also be used with older adults at a senior facility.
