At last years SHAPE National Convention, I was introduced to a game called PaddleZlam (<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PaddleZlam\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">@PaddleZlam<\/a>). Justin Schleider, a physical education teacher, shared this game within the #physed Voxer group. This innovative educator brought a few sets with him for us to play during the SHAPE National Convention and within minutes we were hooked! This is such a fun, energetic and active game. I could not pass up the opportunity to share this game with others.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using the equipment my school has at hand, I modified and introduced this activity during the tennis unit. It\u2019s perfect for high school students developing racquet-type skills, especially when weather forces classes indoors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Equipment Needed:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/sports-pe-recreation\/coach-instructor-resources\/flags-cones-spot-markers\/spot-markers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">polyspot<\/a> per student<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/sports-pe-recreation\/tennis-and-badminton\/other-racquets-paddles\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">paddle<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/sports-pe-recreation\/tennis-and-badminton\/tennis-racquets\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">racquet<\/a> per student<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1-2 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/sports-pe-recreation\/active-play\/bowling\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">bowling pins<\/a> per student<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/search\/index.php?q=foam+tennis+ball\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">foam tennis ball<\/a> per group<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Setup:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-8852 size-large aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/set-up-for-modified-tennis-PE-1024x6031.jpg\" alt=\"set up for modified tennis PE\" width=\"584\" height=\"344\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>How to Play:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Set up a polyspot with 1 or 2 bowling pins on it. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Place another set approximately 20 feet away. One student stands behind each set of pins. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The students will be working as partners (which I refer to below as Partner A and Partner B) to perform a serve-set-hit pattern.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Partner A \u00a0performs an underhand serve to Partner B. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Partner B is going to set the ball back to the server (Partner A) who is now running towards the setter. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Partner A then utilizes a forehand or backhand to hit the ball into the pins attempting to knock them down.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PaddleZlam is a great back-yard type game that physical educators can incorporate into their curriculum. In order to develop students\u2019 tennis skills in this modified tennis\u00a0game, I allowed for the ball to bounce once before the set and the final hit to knock the pins over. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Additional Challenge:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After some practice time with partners, I paired two groups together at each set of pins to compete against each other. Team 1 served twice before Team 2 would do the same. The objective of the game was to be the first team to get to 11 points while fine tuning and better developing their skills. There are numerous ways you can be creative and modify this activity to fit all grade levels. Try it today like this or with your own twist and post how you it has enhanced your lessons.
