Illustrated by Lois Ehlert<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Story Summary<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In this rhyming alphabet book, letters are racing each other to the top of the coconut tree. Will all the letters fit in the coconut tree? Will they help each other get to the top of the coconut tree?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Recommended Ages:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Preschool<\/li>\n<li>Kindergarten<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Activity 1<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Introduce the letters of the alphabet to the students. Place the letters (you can choose to use uppercase or lowercase letters) in a plastic bucket.<\/li>\n<li>Have the students sit in a circle and place the bucket\u00a0in the middle of the circle.<\/li>\n<li>Each student gets a turn to pick a letter until all the letters have been picked. Have the students try to name each letter that is picked.<\/li>\n<li>After all the letters have been picked, count how many letters there are altogether. Review with\u00a0students that there are 26 letters in the alphabet.<\/li>\n<li>Ask the students what else they know about letters (letters in their names, letters in words, the ABC song). Then sing the ABC song together.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong>Materials<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/search\/index.php?q=alphabet+magnets\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Alphabet Magnets<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/item\/large-stacking-buckets-W7485\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Plastic<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Bucket<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Activity 2<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Introduce the story Chicka Chicka Boom Boom to the students.<\/li>\n<li>Ask the students to look at the cover and share what they notice. What might this story be about? Have they seen a tree like that before? What is growing on the tree?<\/li>\n<li>Share with the students that in this story, the first letter is challenging the other letters to join him in climbing up the coconut tree.<\/li>\n<li>Read the story aloud to find out what happens to the letters and the coconut tree!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Materials<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/item\/chicka-chicka-boom-boom-book-EC7433029\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Chicka Chicka Boom Boom<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0book<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Activity 3<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>This next activity can be used as a center after reading Chicka Chicka Boom Boom.<\/li>\n<li>Gather a group of 4-5 students at a table. Give each student a pink piece of construction paper and have them put their name on the back.<\/li>\n<li>Next they will need a piece of brown and green construction paper. Instruct the students on how to cut out a trunk and palm leaves to make the Chicka Chicka Boom Boom coconut tree. Then glue the trunk and palm leaves to the pink paper. Use the cover of the Chicka Chicka Boom Boom book as a model.<\/li>\n<li>Now students will look through magazines to find the letters of the alphabet. They will cut the letters out and glue them to the paper to make it look like the letters are going up to the coconut tree just like in Chicka Chicka Boom Boom.<\/li>\n<li>As the students are adding letters to their coconut trees, discuss with the students the letters and the sounds they make.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Materials<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/search\/index.php?q=Tru-Ray+Sulphite+Construction+Paper\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Tru-Ray Sulphite Construction Paper<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-wplink-edit=\"true\">Pencils<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/item\/fiskars-scissors-for-kids-blunt-tip-SZ626\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Scissors<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/item\/elmers-washable-school-purple-glue-sticks-GL664\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Elmer\u2019s Glue Sticks<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Magazines<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Activity 4<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Gather the class together and reread Chicka Chicka Boom Boom. Let the students chime in if there are parts of the story they remember.<\/li>\n<li>After reading, introduce the interactive <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-7593 size-medium alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/chicka-chicka-boom-boom-book-activity-235x3001.jpg\" alt=\"chicka chicka boom boom book activity\" width=\"235\" height=\"300\" \/>chart for the \u201cChicka Chicka\u201d poem.<br \/>\nChicka Chicka<br \/>\nBoom Boom!<br \/>\nWill there be<br \/>\nenough room?<br \/>\nHere comes ______<br \/>\nup the coconut tree!<\/li>\n<li>The chart will be created ahead of time with a list of letters on a sentence strip.
