With a little indoor space and some creativity, you can have just as much fun inside as you would outside.\u00a0 All you need is a couple of great indoor games\u00a0in your back pocket.<\/p>\n<p>As a physical education teacher and former camper and counselor, I can attest to the benefit of rainy day plans.\u00a0 I always had a couple of go-to plans kept in a folder for rainy days.\u00a0 In fact, where I teach there is no gym.\u00a0 So on cold or rainy days, I have had to get very creative with my activities in order to still teach.\u00a0 Below you will find some general guidelines to follow for indoor games, as well as some great go-to rainy day activities. These work for both summer camp counselors and PE teachers!<!--more--><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"font-size: 125%; text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">General Guidelines for\u00a0Indoor\u00a0Games<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Safety First<\/strong> \u2013 When doing any indoor activity, whether in an open space or a space filled with items, safety is the number one priority.\u00a0 It is important to stress to campers that they are in a confined space and that accidental bumping may occur.\u00a0 Let them know that you\u2019ll know when it\u2019s not an accident, and manage the concern.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Set the Rules<\/strong> \u2013 To ensure fair and safe play, establish clear rules that everyone understands and check for their understanding.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mark of Danger Zones<\/strong> \u2013 If there is an area that has sharp edges or is wet, put up a barrier to keep campers away.\u00a0 Clearly identify these danger zones to avoid injury.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Keep It Simple<\/strong> \u2013 As you will see with the activities below, they are very simple.\u00a0 The simpler you keep it, the more fun and safe the activity will be.\u00a0 The more complex the game is, the greater the chance for confusion, which can lead to someone getting hurt.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"font-size: 125%; text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Indoor\u00a0Games<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<h4 style=\"font-size: 115%; text-align: left;\"><strong>Fitness Bingo:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>This is a sure-fire way to have campers active and on the go on a damp day.\u00a0 This game combines the fun of bingo with creative fitness movements that campers will love.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Equipment:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Bingo sheets with exercises on them<\/li>\n<li>1 writing instrument per camper<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol>\n<li>Each player gets a copy of the bingo sheet with a pencil or crayon to mark off spots on the sheet.<\/li>\n<li>The sheet can have nine different physical activities.\u00a0 Be creative!\u00a0 This can include jumping jacks, bear crawling, running in place, hopping on one foot, and more.\u00a0 Feel free to draw pictures to represent the activities to make it easier for younger campers. \u00a0It\u2019s okay if each sheet you create is exactly the same.<\/li>\n<li>Pick a camper to call out the bingo exercises.<\/li>\n<li>Each time an exercise is called, all campers must perform that exercise. \u00a0Select the number of times you want them to perform each exercise.<\/li>\n<li>The first camper to call bingo when they win gets to call out the exercises during the next round.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Variations:<\/strong> Let the campers create their own bingo cards to play with in small groups.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"font-size: 115%; text-align: left;\"><strong>Silent Speed Ball:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>If done right, this game will not only have campers quiet but also breaking a sweat when the time is up.\u00a0 This is a fun game that engages campers in a small space.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Equipment:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>5\u20137 <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/search\/index.php?q=gator+skin+balls\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gator Skin balls<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol>\n<li>Have the players form a group in a circle.\u00a0 They must not talk.<\/li>\n<li>The campers are to throw the ball across the circle to another camper.<\/li>\n<li>If the other camper fails to catch the ball, they are out. If a camper talks, they are also out.<\/li>\n<li>The goal is to be the last one left at the end.<\/li>\n<li>Add more balls as the campers become more comfortable with one ball. This adds more competition and challenge!<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Variations:<\/strong> Instead of being out, have whoever drops the ball do ten jumping jacks to get back in the game.\u00a0 You can also use different types of balls.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"font-size: 115%; text-align: left;\"><strong>Paper Airplane Bonanza:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Paper airplanes are a childhood rite of passage.\u00a0 If you were never bored enough in class to make one, you missed out! Students use them to be class clowns, pass notes, or get someone\u2019s attention.\u00a0 Now it\u2019s time to unleash the joy of making and throwing paper airplanes on a rainy day. \u00a0This may sound cheesy, but I\u2019ve used this activity in limited spaces many times to teach safe throwing, and it works wonders! This activity combines art, physical movement, and pure go-to fun for a rainy day!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Equipment: <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/arts-and-crafts-supplies\/paper\/construction-paper\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Construction paper<\/a><\/strong> or regular paper of different colors<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/arts-and-crafts-supplies\/basic-craft-supplies\/glue-and-tape\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Glue<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/search\/index.php?q=crayons\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Crayons<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/item\/red-handle-safety-scissors-5-1-2-SZ660\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Scissors<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol>\n<li>Teach the campers how to make a basic paper airplane. If you don\u2019t know how, search the internet or ask if one of the campers knows how.<\/li>\n<li>Allow the campers 10-15 minutes to create and design their plane.<\/li>\n<li>Line the campers up at a designated spot.<\/li>\n<li>Let them throw the planes.<\/li>\n<li>Repeat several times.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Variations<\/strong>: Get creative and let the campers do one-on-one races. \u00a0You can also see who can throw it the farthest or who can keep theirs in the air the longest. \u00a0There are so many more possibilities!<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"font-size: 115%; text-align: left;\"><strong>Sit Down Tag:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>This game involves standing up and sitting down.\u00a0 It\u2019s not only fun but also keeps students constantly moving.\u00a0 At first, students may look at you funny, but after a quick demonstration they will want to be the taggers!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Equipment: <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>One <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/item\/children-s-factory-3-in-1-cube-chair-FN1109\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">chair<\/a><\/strong> or <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/item\/exercise-ball-with-stability-feet-26-W11725\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">big ball <\/a><\/strong>per camper to sit on<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol>\n<li>Have students spread out as if they are in a classroom and stand in front of their chair or ball. You can also decide to just have campers sit on a specific spot on the floor.<\/li>\n<li>Pick one camper to be the tagger. The tagger\u2019s job is to quickly run around and tag the other students before they can sit down. Tagging should only be with two fingers on the other camper\u2019s shoulder or upper back.<\/li>\n<li>Students who are not taggers start the game standing in front of their chair. They cannot sit down until the tagger attempts to tag them.<\/li>\n<li>If tagged, the camper has to do ten jumping jacks in their spot to get back in the game.<\/li>\n<li>If the camper sits down before the tagger tags them, they have five seconds to stand back up.<\/li>\n<li>The tagger may not babysit or stand over those they just tagged.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Variations: <\/strong>Change the amount of time a camper can stay down to three seconds or less. \u00a0You can also add a second or third tagger or change the type of exercise they must do if tagged.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"font-size: 115%; text-align: left;\"><strong>Hula Hoop Tic-Tac-Toe:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Who doesn\u2019t love tic-tac-toe?\u00a0 This game will have campers filled with excitement over a timeless game with a modern twist. This is one of our favorites of all the indoor games.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Equipment:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>9 <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/sports-pe-recreation\/hoops\/?origq=hula%20hoops\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">hula-hoops<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<li>6 beanbags (3 beanbags of one color and 3\u00a0beanbags of another color)<\/li>\n<li>2 <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/item\/sparkling-rainbow-batons-NL121\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">batons<\/a> <\/strong>or<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/item\/replacement-ring-hockey-stick-W5539\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong> sticks<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<li>2<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/sports-pe-recreation\/coach-instructor-resources\/flags-cones-spot-markers\/cones\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">cones<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol>\n<li>Line the campers up in two equal lines.\u00a0 You can do boys vs. girls, bunk vs. bunk, or half and half.<\/li>\n<li>Set 9 hula-hoops like a tic-tac-toe board five to ten yards away.<\/li>\n<li>Have campers line up by teams behind their respective cone.<\/li>\n<li>Place the three colored beanbags and one baton in front of each line.<\/li>\n<li>The first child in each line picks up the baton and a beanbag and runs to the tic-tac-toe board where they place the beanbag in a hoop of their choosing.<\/li>\n<li>The student runs back to the line and hands the baton to the next person in line.\u00a0 That person runs out with the second beanbag and places it in a position to try and block the other team from winning. \u00a0They then run back and hand the baton to the next person.<\/li>\n<li>The third person picks up the last beanbag and places it on the board in an attempt to block the other team or get three in a row first. \u00a0They then run and hand the baton to the fourth person in line if need be.<\/li>\n<li>Person four runs to the board, picks up one of their beanbags, and tries to place it in a different hoop on the board to block the other team or to get their team closer to winning.<\/li>\n<li>This continues until you have a winner. \u00a0It\u2019s just like regular tic-tac-toe but with hoops and beanbags.<\/li>\n<li>Repeat for multiple games.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Variations:<\/strong> Have the players skip, hop, run, gallop, crawl, or do some other type of movement instead of running. \u00a0Or eliminate running to the hoop altogether and have the players underhand toss the beanbags to the hoop.\u00a0 You can add more beanbags to allow everyone to underhand toss if space is limited.<\/p>\n<p>View our step by step <strong><a href=\"\/blog\/tic-tac-toe-relay-pe-activity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">tutorial of this game<\/a><\/strong>, including a video!<\/p>\n<p>Keeping campers active on a rainy day is simple and fun.\u00a0 With a little space, some safety considerations, rules and fairness, and some creativity, rainy days can be one of the best days ever!<\/p>\n<p>Tell us which of these indoor games is your favorite!<\/p>\n<p><strong>About the Author:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/ssww-blog.s3.amazonaws.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Charles-Silberman-Summer-Camp-Icebreakers-232x300.jpg\" alt=\"literacy in physical education\" width=\"232\" height=\"300\" \/>Charles Silberman is a physical education and health teacher with 14 years of teaching experience.
