text-align: left;\">July Book Activity &#8211; The Napping House by Audrey &amp; Don Wood<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Story Summary<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It is a rainy afternoon.\u00a0 A boy, his granny, and their pets are all sleeping peacefully piled up in the same bed.\u00a0 Suddenly a flea bites the mouse and wakes him up.\u00a0 This causes a domino effect of one waking up the other and ends with a broken bed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Recommended Ages: Grades 1st &#8211; 2nd<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Activity 1<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Gather the class on the carpet and tell them they are going to read a story called The Napping House.\u00a0 Before reading, talk about the word napping.\u00a0 What does it mean?\u00a0 Make a list on chart paper of other words that mean the same as napping.\u00a0 Words from the book to add to the list include: slumbering, dozing, and snoozing.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong>Materials<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/search\/index.php?q=chart+tablet+ruled\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chart Tablet Ruled<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/item\/crayolaclassic-broad-tip-markers-SC1036\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Crayola Classic Broad Tip Markers<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Activity 2<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Read The Napping House.\u00a0 While reading, ask the class to notice how the colors change from the beginning of the book to the end.\u00a0 Also, ask them to watch the people and animals sleeping.\u00a0 Do any of them move?\u00a0 Notice the bike left outside in the rain.\u00a0 Is it the boy&#8217;s or Granny&#8217;s?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Materials:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Napping House\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/item\/the-napping-house-book-EC7433027\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">book by Audrey Wood<\/a>\u00a0(also found\u00a0in this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/item\/more-childrens-classics-easy-pack-EC7433\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">children&#8217;s classic pack<\/a>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Activity 3<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>After reading, talk about the characters in the story.\u00a0 Who was the biggest?\u00a0 Who was the smallest?\u00a0 Let the class know they are going to do any activity where they put the characters in order from smallest to biggest.\u00a0 Give each student a worksheet with the characters on it.\u00a0 They are to cut them out and then paste the characters on construction paper in the right order from smallest to biggest.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Materials<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/search\/index.php?q=Elmer%27s+Glue+Sticks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Elmer&#8217;s Glue Sticks<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/item\/tru-ray-sulphite-construction-paper-PE6000\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tru-Ray Sulphite Construction Paper &#8220;18&#215;24&#8221;<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/search\/index.php?q=Fiskars+Student+Scissors\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fiskars Student Scissors<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Teacher-made worksheet of book characters<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Activity 4<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Have the students notice the treehouse in the first picture.\u00a0 Ask the students, &#8220;What if the story took place in the treehouse?\u00a0 Would there be different characters?&#8221;\u00a0 Make a list of &#8220;sleepers&#8221;
