It\u2019s a great station activity to wrap up a basketball unit, encourage sportsmanship, and keep everyone moving and motivated!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Equipment:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Basketball Hoop<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2-8 <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/item\/spectrum-spot-markers-5-circles-W10937\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Spot Markers<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/item\/giant-38-wooden-four-in-a-row-with-carry-case-W13590\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Giant Wooden Four-In-A-Row<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2 Buckets (can use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/item\/speed-stacks-cup-sets-W11699\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Speed Stacks<\/strong><\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/item\/spectrum-catch-bucket-set-W10580\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Regular Buckets<\/strong><\/a>) for the Four-In-A-Row Pieces<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2 <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/item\/spectrum-rubber-basketball-junior-W11635\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Basketballs<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2 <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/sports-and-pe\/coach-and-instructor-resources\/flags-cones-and-spot-markers\/cones\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cones<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Crate or Container (for the basketball)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Set-Up:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Set up the activity for two different groups to play against each other. One group will be the<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Red Team<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the other group the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blue Team<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (that is what color the chips are for the Wooden Four-In-A-Row game). Place a red and blue start cone at opposite elbows of the basketball court key (Foul Line) that the students are going to be starting from. Behind the cones, place the Wooden Four-In-A-Row game in the middle with the red and blue chips inside a bucket lined up with the correct color start points. The spot markers are where the students shot the basketball from. You can have each team shot from as many spot markers as you want (my picture above has 2 for each team). I like to give the students choices based on their skill level. Place a container for the basketballs next to each start cone.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-40486\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Basketball-Game-PE.jpg\" alt=\"Basketball Game PE\" width=\"624\" height=\"467\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Basketball-Game-PE.jpg 624w, https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Basketball-Game-PE-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Basketball-Game-PE-220x165.jpg 220w, https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Basketball-Game-PE-401x300.jpg 401w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 624px) 100vw, 624px\" \/><\/span><strong>Activity Instructions:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I play this game towards the end of our basketball unit with 3rd-4th graders. This is one of the stations they will rotate to in the class. I have a group of 4-6 students that rotate together. The students are told to find a new partner in their group every time they rotate to a new station. I place the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1YE4mxNhnxSuDwIOHmekW9iKbjMhu_TLkMTP6uGNEH_I\/edit?usp=sharing\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">directions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at the station so they remember how to play the game.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Try to make a basket from one of the spots<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">make it<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; Take a circle for your team and place it in the connect 4 board<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">miss it<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; Try again<\/span>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">make it<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, then get a circle<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">miss <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">then you don\u2019t get a circle\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each group is trying to make a connect 4 line before the other team. We talk a lot about sportsmanship in my PE classroom about cheering on your teammate and the other team, giving positive comments (nice try, keep trying, you are doing great), high fives or air high fives, saying good game no matter if you won or lost, and saying thank you to your teammates when done. I have the students either bounce pass the ball to the next team mate or hand the ball to them. They are told to ask their partner before they start, which one they prefer.
