Celebrate America Recycles Day on November 15 by helping your residents become a bit more environmentally savvy. You can do this by teaching a few earth-friendly tips and routines that your residents can begin implementing now.<\/p>\n

1. Eliminate the Plastic Bottles<\/h2>\n

Encourage residents to do away with plastic bottles by inviting them to design their own metal water bottles<\/a><\/strong> that they can reuse at any time. Pass out the permanent markers that are included with the kit for residents to create fun designs on their bottles.<\/p>\n

2. Make Fewer Trips to the Store<\/h2>\n

Help your residents make fewer trips to the store by showing them how to grow their own herb gardens<\/a> <\/strong>right in their room, allowing them to easily add the homemade herbs to their own foods during the autumn season. Before planting, have residents decorate their planters by applying the kit\u2019s self-adhesive stickers to their pot in the desired design. Next, add soil before having residents plant their herb seeds. Encourage residents to maintain their gardens by watering the herbs and setting the pot in a sunny spot in their room.<\/p>\n

3. Plant Trees<\/h2>\n

Invite residents to be a part of the solution to deforestation by showing them how they can plant a tree in your facility\u2019s yard. However, before any outdoor planting occurs, use a pine tree kit<\/a><\/strong> to get residents planting pine trees in indoor containers. Then once the trees grow, arrange for residents to transfer their trees to the ground outdoors.<\/p>\n

4. Start a Recycling Club<\/strong><\/p>\n

Get your residents excited about recycling in your facility by securing small recycling bins from your facility\u2019s local government that your residents can keep in their rooms to make it easier to<\/p>\n

recycle. Schedule a fun club meeting each month, where residents can discuss how they want to recycle in your facility. In fact, book a speaker, like a member of your local government\u2019s environmental department, to come to your facility to share information on the environmental process in your area and how things are eventually broken down and reused.<\/p>\n

As a fun club event, provide residents with plain t-shirts to create \u201cRecycling Club\u201d shirts that can be worn by members each month at the meetings. To make the shirts, simply use plain t-shirts<\/a> <\/strong>and a tie-dye kit<\/a><\/strong>. If decorating t-shirts is too big a project for the club, then consider passing out t-shirt key chains<\/a> <\/strong>that residents can easily decorate for your Recycling Club members using fabric markers<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

5. Create a Rock Garden<\/h2>\n

Help your facility cut down on the costs of watering the garden by having residents paint rocks<\/strong><\/a> in beautiful colors to add to your garden for interest instead of using plants that need water. Simply have residents use the kit\u2019s enclosed paints to add color and interest to the rocks before placing them throughout your outdoor gardens.<\/p>\n
