Celebrate National Skilled Nursing Care Week (May 12-18) with your residents as you recognize this year\u2019s theme for 2024: Radiant Memories \u2013 A Tribute to the Golden Age of Radio. Fill the week with fun activities that allow you to reconnect your residents to the music that they love. You can do so by providing activities that touch upon the different genres of music that your residents enjoy, including jukebox music, piano music, and a few oldies but goodies.<\/p>\n
Jukebox Music<\/strong><\/p>\n Provide enjoyable activities that get your residents rocking to the music of the 1950s and 1960s. For instance, host a Musical Bingo game<\/a><\/strong> featuring music of the jukebox era, like songs from Fats Domino, Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, and Ray Charles. For the activity, simply play the song using the accompanying CD so that residents can try to find the song title on their bingo card.<\/p>\n For those residents who would rather sing than play, pop a 1950s\u2019 Sing Along DVD<\/strong><\/a> into your facility\u2019s DVD player so that residents can read and sing along to the lyrics that appear on the screen. Play fun songs like \u201cThat\u2019s Amore,\u201d \u201cAll Shook Up,\u201d and \u201cHow Much Is That Doggie in the Window?\u201d<\/p>\n Piano Music<\/strong><\/p>\n Get your residents recalling the classic tunes that they remember their parents singing as you play a CD of piano songs<\/strong><\/a> that include hits like \u201cBye Bye Blackbird,\u201d \u201cMy Wild Irish Rose,\u201d and \u201cBicycle Built for Two.\u201d<\/p>\n Oldies But Goodies Music<\/strong><\/p>\n Have fun as you encourage residents to sing Karaoke songs<\/strong><\/a> of yesteryear on your facility\u2019s Karaoke machine<\/strong><\/a>, like \u201cMy Girl\u201d by The Temptations, \u201cMy Boyfriend\u2019s Back\u201d by The Angels, and \u201cDancing in the Streets\u201d by Martha and the Vandellas.<\/p>\n In addition, during your one-on-one visits, engage residents visually by sharing music conversation cards<\/strong><\/a> to spark discussions about their memories of music. Furthermore, consider getting your residents hands involved too by providing musical hand therapy<\/strong><\/a>, in which you follow the accompanying booklet to access acupressure points on your resident\u2019s hand as the two of you hum to familiar songs.<\/p>\n Folk Music<\/strong><\/p>\n Get your residents up and moving to American folk music as you play a Music and Motions DVD<\/strong><\/a> that allows residents to move to the music as they sing along. Simply follow the instructor\u2019s lead as you guide residents to perform the seated stretching exercises.<\/p>\n Patriotic Music<\/strong><\/p>\n When it comes to sing-alongs, don\u2019t forget about the popular patriotic music. Play a patriotic CD<\/strong><\/a> and invite residents to sing \u201cYankee Doodle Dandy,\u201d \u201cHome on the Range,\u201d and \u201cMy Country \u2018Tis of Thee.\u201d<\/p>\n Country Music<\/strong><\/p>\n Tap into your residents\u2019 love of country music by hosting a fun What\u2019s the Next Line? game, in which you play a few lines of a well-known country music song<\/strong><\/a> to see whether they can recall the next line. Play fun songs like \u201cOn the Road Again,\u201d \u201cHey Good Looking,\u201d and \u201cTennessee Waltz.\u201d<\/p>\n Broadway Music<\/strong><\/p>\n Invite residents to play a fun game of Name the Broadway Musical as you play popular Broadway songs<\/strong><\/a> for residents to try to identify before guessing the musical. For the activity, divide residents into teams to see how many songs and musicals the teams can name.<\/p>\n Television Music<\/strong><\/p>\n Help residents recall the popular television jingles of the past as you play a fun game of Name That Old T.V. Jingle<\/strong><\/a>. To play, simply play the television jingles from the CD to see if residents can identify the product that is being advertised. Caribbean Music<\/strong><\/p>\n Encourage residents to recall their past visits to the Caribbean as you play fun limbo music<\/strong><\/a> so that residents and staff members can try their hand at dancing the limbo. Be sure to keep the pole high for residents, but lower it for the staff members!<\/p>\n Spiritual Music<\/strong><\/p>\n Recreate your residents\u2019 memories in church as you play spiritual music<\/strong><\/a> for residents to sing along. Pass out hymn lyrics, and encourage residents to sing along to \u201cAmazing Grace,\u201d \u201cWade in the Water,\u201d and \u201cSwing Low, Sweet Chariot.\u201d<\/p>\n Band Music<\/strong><\/p>\n Finally, consider starting your own band as you pass out musical instruments<\/strong><\/a> for residents to play.
