It is also helpful to incorporate current events when working with children to encourage community awareness and opportunities to communicate about current events, or seasons and holidays.\u00a0 As a child care worker, parent, or teacher, you know that playful opportunities lose their charm if kids can\u2019t connect to their world around them through play. Like trying to play a game about snow ball fights (that one is coming) in summer or rain storms during a blizzard.\u00a0 The activities just lose some of their appeal. Whereas, when you are able to make a game timely that relates to something <a href=\"\/blog\/?s=star+wars&amp;submit=Search\">popular<\/a> or a season, the game has major potential for success.<\/p>\n<p>With that said, who wants to be the king and queen of Mardi Gras?\u00a0In this game, everyone wins.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Suggested Supplies:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/item\/velvet-art-crowns-PS1353\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Crowns<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/item\/mardi-gras-beads-SL4547\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Beads<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/item\/precut-eye-masks-PE1330\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Masks<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/item\/spectrum-nylon-mesh-pinnies-youth-size-W4825S\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pinnies<\/a> (Green, Yellow, Purple)<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/search\/index.php?q=speed+stack&amp;scope=narrow&amp;sort=best\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Stacking Cups \/ Speed Stacks<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/item\/spectrum-fleece-balls-W4836\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fleece Balls<\/a> (or small Gator Balls like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/item\/gator-skin-super-70-ball-2-3-4-W9150\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Super 70<\/a>)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Objective:<\/strong> To be the last team with a cup standing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Team Rolls:<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright wp-image-2810 \" src=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Kid-in-green-jersey-e14526952543871.jpg\" alt=\"Mardi gras phys ed game\" width=\"286\" height=\"309\" \/> <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Protector or King\/Queen = protect the cups and give balls to their teammates<\/li>\n<li>Destroyer = in charge of throwing cups at other cities<\/li>\n<li>Collector = in charge of collecting balls from their team\u2019s king\/queen or by getting them from the overthrows<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Setting Up the Game:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Divide the class into three groups (gold, purple, and green). Ask them to build a city made of cups of their respective colors. If you are playing in a gym, you could ask each team to building in a corner of the gym or space them out around the center court circle.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Add a variable:<\/strong> Mix in different single color <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/item\/red-solo-cups-BR190\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">plastic cups<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Set up a throw zone and a parade route \u2013 all destroyers must have one foot in the \u2018throw zone\u2019 and each cup city must be built within the parade route.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Add a variable for age and ability:<\/strong> The older, or more able, the farther apart the \u2018zones\u2019 should be .<\/p>\n<p>Allow time for the children to communicate with each other and build their city. After a pre-determined time the building is to stop and the teams are ready to play.<\/p>\n<p>Be prepared with a Mardi Gras playlist.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Let the Game Mardi Gras Game Begin:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>When the music starts, the game begins with each person engaged in their role.\u00a0 The<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-2813\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/JBNTEM1.jpg\" alt=\"mardi gras for physical education\" width=\"300\" height=\"155\" \/> balls should all be placed in a far corner of the gym so the Collectors have to run, roll, and crawl to get the balls. They can (and should) decide if they are going to throw or run them back to their awaiting Destroyers.\u00a0 The Protectors have to decide if it is better to hit the balls away, or catch them and throw them.<\/p>\n<p>When all the cups in a city have been knocked on their side, that city\u2019s knocked out and the Protector sits while the Destroyers and Collectors can choose to work with another team.\u00a0 When only one city still has a cup standing, that team is the winner of that round and the music stops.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Add a variable:<\/strong> Ask the teams to help \u2018recycle\u2019 their cities by stacking the cups back together by size and color to get ready for another round.\u00a0 Encourage everyone to change roles.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Add a variable:<\/strong> You can also have two Protectors \u2013 one that collects and distributes the balls as they come in to the city and one protects the city.<\/p>\n<p>Remember, keep this game timely beyond just the colors of Mardi Gras, by letting the kids wear Mardi Gras masks (protectors wear crowns) AND add <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/item\/mardi-gras-beads-SL4547\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">beads<\/a><\/strong> to the game by tossing each member of the winning team a string of beads for each round they win.\u00a0 Make sure you have a batch of beads to hand out at the end of the game for all the good sports.
