There are\u00a04 activities she used for Family STEM Night at MSA West this year.\u00a0The students loved the Rocket Launchers the best. Then inform the students that the launch board is a piece of equipment designed for a forceful step with one foot on the short end. This propels an object into the air from the other end of the board. Explain to the students they have a mission to complete. Their mission is to launch their item into the air and catch the item without moving their feet!<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"font-size: 125%; text-align: center;\">How Does Exercise Affect Your Heart Rate<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-17208\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/heart-rate-STEM-night.jpg\" alt=\"heart rate STEM night\" width=\"900\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/heart-rate-STEM-night.jpg 900w, https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/heart-rate-STEM-night-220x147.jpg 220w, https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/heart-rate-STEM-night-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/heart-rate-STEM-night-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/heart-rate-STEM-night-450x300.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Equipment:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Stethoscopes<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/search\/index.php?q=clean+wipes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Alcohol wipes<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/item\/jumbo-match-ercise-game-8-5-x-11-75-W14294\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Exercise cards<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The student takes the stethoscope and listens to his or her heart rate. I usually tell the students your heart rate can be found over the heart, wrist, neck (carotid artery) or sometimes on top of the head. I usually let the student experiment with the stethoscope and try to find their pulse in different spots. Once they listen, have them choose an exercise card (I usually have about 10 different cards with different cardio exercises on them). Once the student completes the exercise, have them listen to his or her heart rate again. Then let the student compare and contrast the two heart rates (The two most common answers are louder and faster).<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"font-size: 125%; text-align: center;\">Leaning Tower of Cups<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-17209\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/cup-stacking-STEM-night-PE.jpg\" alt=\"cup stacking STEM night PE\" width=\"900\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/cup-stacking-STEM-night-PE.jpg 900w, https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/cup-stacking-STEM-night-PE-220x147.jpg 220w, https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/cup-stacking-STEM-night-PE-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/cup-stacking-STEM-night-PE-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/cup-stacking-STEM-night-PE-450x300.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Equipment:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>6 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/search\/index.php?q=table+tennis+balls&amp;scope=narrow&amp;in_stock=true&amp;sort=best\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ping pong balls<\/a> per student<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>6 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/item\/red-solo-cups-16oz-BR190\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Plastic cups<\/a> per student<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Each person has 6 cups and 6 ping pong balls. Take 1 cup and 1 ball and bounce the ping pong ball on the ground and catch it with the cup. If they successfully complete this task, put another cup on top of the ping pong ball. Now bounce and catch the second ping pong ball with the stack of cups (The base will be unstable because the cup is on top of the ball. Make sure they don\u2019t cheat by holding multiple cups). Their hand should be very close the the bottom of the bottom cup. The student continues to add a ball and a cup each time they successfully catch the ball with the cup. If they miss the ball, the student needs to start over.<\/p>\n<p><em>Modification:<\/em> Have a partner bounce to the student.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"font-size: 125%; text-align: center;\">Air Flow<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-17210\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/STEM-night-PE-air-flow-activity.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"764\" height=\"510\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/STEM-night-PE-air-flow-activity.jpg 764w, https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/STEM-night-PE-air-flow-activity-220x147.jpg 220w, https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/STEM-night-PE-air-flow-activity-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/STEM-night-PE-air-flow-activity-449x300.jpg 449w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 764px) 100vw, 764px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Equipment:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>1 Poly spot donut shapes per 2 students\u00a0(or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/search\/index.php?q=floor+tape\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">floor tape<\/a>)<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>2 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/item\/spectrumcompetition-flying-disc-W9706\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Frisbees<\/a> (can use paper plates)<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>10 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/search\/index.php?q=table+tennis+balls&amp;scope=narrow&amp;in_stock=true&amp;sort=best\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ping pong balls<\/a> per 2 students<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The objective is to get as many ping pong balls as you can on the polyspot in 3 minutes (I say one song). Start all students from the same side of the area of play. Place the poly spot 20-25 feet away from the students. Students will have the frisbees and ping pong ball opposite of the poly spot. Students fan the ping pong on to the poly spot, without touching the ping pong. The ping pong must stop on the poly spot. If the ping pong is touched, the students must start all over.
