Mix &amp; Match is one such activity from our Game Genie unit that exercises the students\u2019 bodies as well as their minds. Students love this activity, because it gives them the opportunity to work with friends and to teach a game they created to others. This activity works best for 2<sup>nd<\/sup>-5<sup>th<\/sup> grade students, but can be adapted to include any age group.<\/p>\n<p>This activity combines physical activity, STEAM, and Makerspace!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-15278\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/mix-and-match-makerspace-activity1.png\" alt=\"mix and match makerspace activity\" width=\"350\" height=\"496\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Equipment Needed:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Various sport-specific equipment\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/sports-pe-recreation\/tennis-and-badminton\/tennis-racquets\/?fp=W4497\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tennis rackets<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/sports-pe-recreation\/football\/footballs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">footballs<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/sports-pe-recreation\/hoops\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">hula hoops<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/sports-pe-recreation\/baseball-softball\/toy-training-bats\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">wiffle ball bats<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/sports-pe-recreation\/hockey\/pucks-balls\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">hockey pucks<\/a>, etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Various craft materials\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/arts-and-crafts-supplies\/craft-trims\/pipe-cleaners\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chenille stems<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/arts-and-crafts-supplies\/wood-crafts\/craft-sticks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">craft sticks<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/item\/tulip-rubber-bands-PT3476\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">rubber bands<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/item\/paper-clips-OC1041\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">paper clips<\/a>, cardboard, etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Set-up:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Place sports equipment in the middle of a large, open space. Set craft items in another area. Put students into teams of 3-4.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Instructions:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Ask students their favorite games and what they have in common. This is an opportunity to highlight the need for rules, scoring system, safety considerations, etc. Inform students that they will be creating their own games. Their game must use at least 3 items from different sports and one they create themselves, using craft items. Give teams 5 minutes or so to brainstorm ideas and decide which items would work best for this challenge. Have students choose athletic equipment in whatever way works best for their group.<\/p>\n<p>Remind students they must determine the rules of the game, how a winner is determined, number of players, and any other details needed for the game to work. Remind them they must also create an item that is used in their game. Encourage students to test and revise their game, as needed.<\/p>\n<p>When finished, have each group present their game to the rest of the group. Allow students to play each game after rules are explained.
