Kids want to be challenged and love a good competition. These past few weeks, the Hula Hoop Showdown activity has been so popular on social media. Parents, friends, and colleagues were tagging me in posts about it begging for me to try it out.<\/p>\n<p>When I first watched the video of the activity, I liked the concept of it, but thought there were way to many kids just standing around and waiting. My goal was to modify it in order to find a way to still keep it competitive and fun, but add in more movement. I read over the comments people were making on the original post and began to develop a plan for my own version that would hopefully meet the needs of what everyone was requesting. The result is an updated version of the Hoop Hop Showdown, which I renamed to the RPS (Rock, Paper, Scissors) Hoop Showdown.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"font-size: 125%; text-align: center;\">RPS HOOP SHOWDOWN<\/h2>\n<div align=\"center\">\n<div style=\"width: 584px;\" class=\"wp-video\"><!--[if lt IE 9]><script>document.createElement('video');<\/script><![endif]-->\n<video class=\"wp-video-shortcode\" id=\"video-14529-1\" width=\"584\" height=\"329\" preload=\"metadata\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"video\/mp4\" src=\"http:\/\/cdn.ssww.com\/share\/Hula_Hop_Showdown.mp4?_=1\" \/><a href=\"http:\/\/cdn.ssww.com\/share\/Hula_Hop_Showdown.mp4\">http:\/\/cdn.ssww.com\/share\/Hula_Hop_Showdown.mp4<\/a><\/video><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>Recommended Grades: 2<sup>nd<\/sup> and up<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Equipment: <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/sports-pe-recreation\/hoops\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Hula Hoops<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/item\/spectrum-catch-bucket-set-W10580\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Buckets<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>Tokens (Milk jug tops or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/item\/plastic-bingo-chips-W10020\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">bingo chips<\/a>) <\/strong><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/sports-pe-recreation\/coach-instructor-resources\/flags-cones-spot-markers\/cones\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Cones<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 style=\"font-size: 115%; text-align: center;\">Set Up<\/h2>\n<p>Split up your class so that students are in groups of no larger than 3, possibly 4. I had 24 in a class so I made 6 teams. The smaller the teams the better! The hoops are set-up in a snowflake diagram and one cone is placed at the end of each line. Next to each cone is a bucket containing 20-25 tokens.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-14550\" style=\"margin-top: 0.4em;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/hoop-hop-showdown-RPS-game1.jpg\" alt=\"hoop hop showdown RPS game\" width=\"900\" height=\"535\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Tip:<\/strong> Use\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/item\/easy-hoop-clips-pack-W12411\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">hoop clips<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0to connect the hoops together and keep them from moving around. They\u00a0work with any hoop with a cross sectional diameter of 0.85\u201d.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/item\/easy-hoop-clips-pack-W12411\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-14650 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/hoop-clips-PE1.png\" alt=\"hoop clips PE\" width=\"1000\" height=\"259\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"font-size: 115%; text-align: center;\">How to Play RPS Showdown<\/h2>\n<p>One student from each team goes at a time. I tell my students 1 person from your team on the playing board at a time. Students must jump into each hoop to move across the board. Their goal is to make it to another teams cone in order to earn one of their tokens to take back to their team\u2019s bucket. As the student is jumping, they can come head to head with another student. These 2 students then play Rock, Paper, Scissors (RPS). The winner of RPS gets to keep jumping The student that loses then steps out of the hoop and runs back to their team. As soon as a student steps out of a hoop (off the playing board) the next person on their team can begin. The same happens if a student makes it to another teams cone; that student steps out of the hoop (which allows their next teammate to begin) they then can get a token and run it back to their\u00a0team\u2019s\u00a0bucket.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/item\/jumbo-inflatable-rock-paper-scissors-W13783\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"noborder alignright wp-image-14554 size-medium\" style=\"margin-top: 0.4em;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/rock-paper-scissors-jumbo-inflatable-e1536067622636-300x2441.png\" alt=\"ock paper scissors jumbo inflatable\" width=\"300\" height=\"244\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>You can keep playing as long as you like. My students loved it and were exhausted after about 20 minutes. If you want to add even more activity, have the students complete an exercise when they return to their cone. For example 15 jumping jacks, squats or push-ups.<\/p>\n<p>Another fun variation is to use a pair of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/item\/jumbo-inflatable-rock-paper-scissors-W13783\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">jumbo inflatable rock paper scissors<\/a> either as part of the hoop hop game, or for students to play while at their team&#8217;s bucket!<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"font-size: 125%; text-align: center;\">National PE Standards Addressed<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-14552\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/rock-paper-scissors-hoop-hop-showdown1.jpg\" alt=\"rock paper scissors hoop hop showdown\" width=\"960\" height=\"644\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Standard 1:<\/strong>\u00a0The physically literate individual demonstrates competency in a variety of motor skills and movement patterns.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Can the student jump using two feet correctly leaving and landing on the ground?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Standard 2:<\/strong>\u00a0The physically literate individual applies knowledge of concepts, principles, strategies and tactics related to movement and performance.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Can the student make a strategic decision on which way to go in order to be the most successful during the game?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Standard 4:<\/strong>\u00a0The physically literate individual exhibits responsible personal and social behavior that respects self and others.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Can the student remain positive and show sportsmanship towards their peers?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Standard 5:<\/strong>\u00a0The physically literate individual recognizes the value of physical activity for health, enjoyment, challenge, self-expression and\/or social interaction.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Is the student enjoying himself or herself and positively interacting with their peers?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-14553 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ssww.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/tara-yost-pe-teacher1.jpg\" alt=\"pe teacher hoop hop showdown\" width=\"172\" height=\"228\" \/><\/strong><strong>About the Author:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Tara Yost just began her 9<sup>th<\/sup> year of teaching Elementary Physical Education and currently teaches in Meriden, Kansas.
