How to Use the Calendar For Your Program

We have listed the daily holidays or observances that fall on each day of the month. Some days have multiple holidays, so you can choose to focus on just one, plan an activity for each one, or combine them if possible. For example, October 6th is World Smile Day and National Diversity Day. In the classroom, teachers can make smiley face name tags for each student and have them write something that makes them special or unique. Have each student share, then have a discussion about what diversity is and how it relates to their classroom and the community.

You can also use a fun smiley face puzzle to explain the importance of inclusion to students. View more diversity ideas on our blog.

You may choose to use the calendar to plan your activities each month and develop themes around each of the days or a combination of days. The first week of October includes World Farm Animals Day, National Butterfly & Hummingbird Day, and World Animal Day – perfect for an Animal & Insect Theme that week.

If you are just looking for some filler ideas or last minute ideas, refer to the calendar on any particular day and come up with a quick lesson or activity related to the daily holiday or observance. Some of these can even be used for brain breaks.

On pages 2 & 3, you will find an activity suggestion for each holiday and observance under the Activity Ideas section. For example, World Egg Day is a great observance for a PE class or rec program – have kids practice their balance and coordination with an Egg Transfer Challenge! Or, a science teacher can plan an Egg Drop Challenge where students must design a way to keep a raw egg from cracking when dropped from a height. Be sure to share it on social media with the hashtag #WorldEggDay!

  1. Hello, just a note for you.
In your October calendar you have a Day of the death in the 31 along with Halloween.
The day of the death, El día de los muertos is celebrated in November 2nd, and is not like Halloween is more like memorial day. 😜

    • Hi Janette! Thank you for letting us know, we had searched Google for Day of the Dead and it said it starts on Oct 31 and ends on Nov 2nd. But after looking into it further it does say it is mainly celebrated on November 2nd. We will make the change. Thanks again!

    • Hi Rasha, there are several ideas in the calendars that are able to be altered for social distancing. If you are teaching virtually and you have this ability for your program, you may consider send activity bags home to students with some craft kits and supplies, as well as educational activities and ways for them to keep active, like playground balls. Also, students can use household items to alter the activities, for example the Egg Toss, they can use spoons and ping pong balls. Let us know if you have a particular activity in mind that you would like ideas on how to alter for social distancing or virtual learning. Thanks!

  2. Would be nice to be able to access your November calendar of holidays/observances now. October calendar is already done and working on November.
