The patterns show octagonal shapes. There are no octagonal shaped beads. Confusing for the children.

My son is visually impaired and with only 10-20% vision in one eye and none in other he can see the blocks and see the colors. He is also deaf so signing colors and shapes at the same time. Very educational.

In our preschool classroom, the children have found that there are not enough blocks to match the pattern strips given (ie: requires 2 purple square blocks and we only have one supplied). However, we have encouraged the kids to take paper to be placed between the dowels and pattern strips with their own creations and patterns for their friends to try.

I bought this unit as one of the comments was someone using it for fine motor skills for her classes. I agree if you have a child that needs fine motor/gross skills help get this unit. My daughter learned really quickly how to set up the sticks and put the beads on the sticks. We also use this set with shoe laces and string to make the activity a bit more difficult so she can advance her skills. I like that the box closes and you can just store it away.
