P.E. Central Lesson Plan: Horseshoe Running
Suggested Grade Level:K-5
Materials Needed:Large cones (9 or more)
Lesson Plan:Description of Idea
Set up cones in the shape of a BIG horseshoe. Have students line up at the bottom of one side of the horseshoe (the finish line is the other bottom of the horseshoe). There will be two lines: one line for students to run along the outside of the horseshoe and one line for students to run along the inside of the horseshoe. Students will run in pairs and then walk back with their partner to the start line. The teacher stands at the start line and lets each pair know when to "GO". My kids love this activity. They get tons of running without knowing it!
Give faster runners more space between pairs.
Change the locomotor skill.
Have students bounce a ball, jump rope, toss a ball back and forth with their partner, etc. while traveling along the horseshoe.
Make sure the horseshoe is BIG enough so students are not waiting in the start line.
Assess student or class progress in the skill(s) that is being performed during the activity.
