P.E. Central Lesson Plan: Up Up Up
Prerequisites:
Ability to perform fundamental locomotor skills, move safely in general space, and dribble a ball with the hand.
Purpose of Activity:
Many young children bring a ball behind their head and throw it OUT instead of UP. The purpose of this lesson idea helps young children to push UP, rather than OUT when shooting a basketball.
Suggested Grade Level:
K-2
Materials Needed:
volleyball court or other space large enough for all students to move safely; volleyball net(s) or rope(s) with 6”-8” streamers bisecting the court with the ability to raise and lower the net(s)/rope(s) easily; appropriate-sized basketball; playground ball; or foam ball for each student; appropriate height basketball hoops (variable heights preferred)
Lesson Plan:
Description of Idea This lesson contains three separate tasks.
1. Children line up on the endline of a volleyball court, facing the net. On a signal children safely perform a designated locomotor skill across the court, ducking under the net. The net is lowered after all children have moved to the opposite side of the court. This continues, gradually lowering the net until the net is low enough to force children to crawl under it to reach the opposite side. Children reaching the opposite side without touching the net score an imaginary point.
2. Children each have an appropriate ball and adequate space. On the signal, children dribble from the endline of the court to the net/rope, “shoot” the ball over the net, crawl under the net to retrieve their ball, and continue dribbling to the opposite endline. If using a foam ball, students perform a locomotor movement in place of dribbling. When all children have made it to the opposite end line, raise the net(s)/rope(s) slightly. During this task it is important to keep enough space between children to avoid safety concerns due to interference with other childrens' balls. Feedback should be given to children using simplified cues (see http://www.pecentral.org/lessonideas/cues/ViewCues.asp?ID=72 for BEEF cues), with focus on beginning shot in proper position and pushing the ball UP.
3. This task can be done with a partner. One child in each partner set dribbles to a designated basket (set at an appropriate height) and shoots the ball using proper technique practiced in the previous task. If the ball hits any part of the hoop, rim, net, and/or backboard, one point is scored. If the basket is made, two points are scored. Partners alternate turns, keeping track of points scored by both children. After children have had a few minutes to complete this task have children begin scoring from zero to see if they can beat their previous score.
• If there are not enough baskets for one basket for every two children use your imagination to provide enough “baskets.” Targets (i.e., taped squares) can be placed on the walls of your gymnasium to represent baskets.
• The non-shooting partner can be given dribbling challenges to complete to avoid wait-time.
Assessment Ideas:
• Peer assessments: have partner indicate “thumb up” for proper technique (based on cue given) and “thumb down” for improper technique
• Teacher observation:
o Are students able to perform cues focused on during class?
o Do students choose baskets of appropriate height for their ability levels?
o Are students able to dribble while moving?
Teaching Suggestions:
If you feel the students are having to wait too long before they go under the net, have the students do the following tasks while they are in line: balance on one foot; hop; perform mini jumps, high knees, and/or open shut feet jumps
Adaptations for Students with Disabilities:
• Slant net(s)/rope(s) to allow each child to choose an appropriate height.
• Use lights/smaller balls
