P.E. Central Lesson Plan: Parachute Volleyball
Prerequisites:Students must be taught the overhead pass and the forearm pass prior to game play.
Purpose of Activity:Students will perform the overhead pass and the forearm pass used in volleyball.
Suggested Grade Level:6-8
Materials Needed:Parachute; 15-20 beachballs or soft foam balls; and music
Lesson Plan:Description of Idea
The class is divided into 3 teams depending on how large the class is. All students hold on to the parachute, alternating order so that no player from a team is next to another player from the same team (e.g. a player from team 1 is next to a player from team 2, who is next to a player from team 3, who is next to a player from team 1 etc.). Two teams then let go of the parachute and take 2-5 steps back away from the parachute so that one team is holding the parachute with the balls on the parachute when the game begins. When the music starts, the team holding the parachute begins to shake the parachute to get the balls on the floor. The other two teams use the overhead or forearm pass to hit the balls back on the parachute. If a ball touches the floor the team holding the parachute gets a point. If a ball touches the floor it remains there. Tams rotate position every minute.
Avoid playing this game where lights and windows can be damaged.
Use beach balls or light foam balls for safety.
This activity is very accomodating for students in wheelchairs. The parachute and beachballs are light in weight, therefore they are very easy to move.
If the class is small, I would suggest a small parachute and less equipment.
Instead of concentrating on the form of the two passes, the students can focus on just trying to keep the equipment on the parachute by hitting them with their hands.
If the teams begin to launch the balls too high in the air with the parachute, modify the game so that the team holding the parachute must keep their arms at their waist and must bend and straighten their legs to ripple the parachute.
See how long teams can play before all of the balls are off of the parachute.
Watch for students to move to the ball before putting their hands together to forearm pass.
