P.E. Central Lesson Plan: Dribbling Maze
Purpose of Activity:To give students opportunities to practice and improve their dribbling skills in a game-like situation. Emphasize the cue of "Looking up" in order to avoid (or tag) others.
Suggested Grade Level:4-5
Materials Needed:One bouncable ball for each student; one poly spot ; carpet square or other floor marker for almost every student; cones or other boundary markers if needed;
Lesson Plan:Description of Idea
After giving students plenty of opportunities to practice "looking up" when dribbling in various "practice" situations, let them know they'll now get to put this skill to use by playing in a game-like situation.
Students (the "movers") line up behind a line on the smaller width side of the gym or playing area. Have a few (2-3) students (the "taggers") take one poly spot each and put it in the playing area, away from each other but within the boundaries. EVERY student, whether on a carpet square or behind the line, has a ball with which to dribble.
On the signal, the "movers" begin to travel and dribble to the opposite boundary line, trying to avoid being tagged by those students who are standing and dribbling on a carpet square ("taggers"). (Taggers must always have one foot on the carpet square and must be dribbling the ball when they tag a "mover".) If a tagger tags a "mover", causes him/her to lose control of his/her ball, or if a "mover" goes outside the boundary line, then that student also becomes a "tagger" by getting a poly spot and placing it in the playing area.
Once "movers" have made it through the maze to the opposite boundary line, they wait there until the signal is given to travel to the opposite line. When only a few "movers" remain, begin a new game.
During play, take a break to remind students how important it is to "look up" when they are dribbling, whether they are on a square or travelling. (Since students have been working on this skill before this, this "game" becomes a great way to assess if students consistently perform the cue of "looking up" when traveling and dribbling.)
For safety reasons, do not allow "taggers" to position their carpet squares side-by-side in a row.
If students become more concerned with the rules and how others are playing, stop the game and discuss the concepts of cooperation and playing fair with students.
The offensive concept of keeping one's body between the ball and the defender (the "tagger) can also be introduced and practiced in this game.
For students who are more advanced, you may wish to add the basketball violation of "travelling". Students who move while holding the ball must also get a carpet square.
