The student must have knowledge of AB patterns and prior practice in a variety of locomotor movements.
Purpose of Activity:
To reinforce AB patterns taught in the classroom and to practice locomotor movements.
Suggested Grade Level:
Materials Needed:
Cut out and laminate 20 of each of the following Halloween items: bats; ghosts; Frankenstein faces; spiders; Jack-O’-Lanterns; witches hats; and witches brooms; Physical activity: locomotor movements
Lesson Plan:
Description of Idea

Assign students a partner and a designated “home” in the perimeter of the gym. Scatter all of the Halloween items throughout the gym (some can be hidden under poly spots). The students will travel with their partner using a predetermined locomotor movement to retrieve one item at a time, which they bring back to their “home.” The students should retrieve a different item each time and then they must continue that AB pattern as many times as the teacher designates. Students can repeat the pattern three times (AB, AB, AB) so that each student gets a variety of activity and has to retrieve different items each time. Once they have the concept, let them start new patterns as they finish until all items are gone or patterns can no longer be completed with what is left. Stop the activity periodically to change the locomotor movement.


Repeat the pattern twice instead of three times.

Increase to an ABC or ABCD pattern and have them repeat two or three times.

Choose a different locomotor movement to use each turn.

Assessment Ideas:

Visually check each group to see if they have the pattern correct.

Observe students locomotor movements while they are retrieving.
