P.E. Central Lesson Plan: Card Sharks Dribble and Catch
Prerequisites:Prior practice with the skill of dribbling is necessary.
Purpose of Activity:This activity allows students to practice their dribbling skills by focusing on the cue of "fingerpads".
Suggested Grade Level:1-2
Materials Needed:One hoop and bounce-able ball for each student (plus a few extras of each); one deck of playing cards; chart*;
Lesson Plan:Description of Idea
Scatter hoops around the gym floor and place a playing card, face down, in each hoop. On the signal to begin, students will dribble to a hoop and pickup a card (while trying to keep dribbling, if possible). If the card is black, the students will bounce the ball inside the hoop the number of times which the card shows. If the card is red, the student will toss and catch the ball the number of times the card shows. When finished, the student replaces the card face down and moves to another hoop. All face cards will be worth "ten" and an ace is worth "eleven" dribbles.
If dribbling or tossing and catching are too hard, students may
bounce and catch the ball.
*It would be very helpful to have a large chart to hang on the wall in
which a card is pictured along with the "point" value underneath it, as
some students may have difficulty in remembering what the face cards are
So that students get maximum time to practice the skill of dribbling,
you may want to put a few more "black" cards out, vs. red.
As you observe students dribbling, determine if they almost always,
usually, or hardly ever use their fingerpads to dribble.
