P.E. Central Lesson Plan: Grocery Shopping
Prerequisites:Exposure to addition principles and money and basic underhand throwing.
Purpose of Activity:The purpose of this activity is to improve addition skills by using money and to improve the skill of throwing.
Suggested Grade Level:1-2
Materials Needed:Beanbags; small balls; and laundry baskets Physical activity: Throwing
Lesson Plan:Description of Idea
Scatter beanbags and balls around the general space. Each ball or bean bag needs to be labeled as a type of food (orange balls would be Oranges, bean bags could have green beans written on them, etc.) and have a monetary amount (price) printed on them. Students will be paired up with a partner.
Tell the students that they are in a grocery store and they have a
set amount of money that they can spend (set the money limit prior to
each shopping spree, for example $10.00). Partners are to travel around the store with one person holding the shopping basket and the other person picking up (buying) the groceries. The person picking up the food is to throw the food into the basket different ways using different hands (right/left), levels (low/medium/ high), and pathways (straight/curved/zig-zagged) while the two of them are traveling around the general space.
The basket holder is to catch the food at different levels, distances, etc. Once half of the allotted limit has been spent they are to switch positions. When they have reached their limit, then they can throw and catch with any "food" in their basket until the signal is given to stop. Repeat the activity with a new money limit.
Groups can carry pencil and paper around the store with them so that they can add as they go along. Specify a particular way to throw with each trip, (i.e.,) throw with your non-dominant hand only, throw at a low level only.
Instead of labeling equipment, teachers can have students cut out pictures and place them beside different pieces of equipment, play money can be used for throwing activities. Other math concepts can be included such as estimation, addition, subtraction, problem-solving.
