Odor ruins the fun do using these sacks

I loved the look of these traditional burlap sacks. They were very sturdy and more appealing than others on the market. However, the strong chemical odor is unbearable. I aired them outside for a week before using them and it did not help. I even tried washing one in the laundry machine, but it damaged the sack, so that was not an option. Even that still had a strong odor after being washed! They came with a letter from the supplier explaining the odor (so I am obviously not the first person to raise this issue). They claim they are safe and it is caused by part of the cleaning process to soften the burlap. Sadly, I would not recommend them based upon the odor and potential exposure to chemicals.
