How to Use the Calendar For Your Program
We have listed the daily holidays or observances that fall on each day of the month. Some days have multiple holidays, so you can choose to focus on just one, plan an activity for each one, or combine them if possible. For example, November 8th is National STEM/STEAM Day and also National Parents as Teachers Day. Plan a STEAM lesson for this day and send your kids home with an activity sheet so they can share what they are learning in school with their parents, and create their own fun STEAM lesson that they can work on together with household items. Here are some great suggestions. Below are a few of our favorites.
You may choose to use the calendar to plan your activities each month and develop themes around each of the days or a combination of days. The first full week of November includes American Football Day and Basketball Day, so you can plan a Sports Week for your program with sports themed activities. Plus, you can plan some crafts – how cute are these paracord figures?
If you are just looking for some filler ideas or last minute ideas, refer to the calendar on any particular day and come up with a quick lesson or activity related to the daily holiday or observance. Some of these can even be used for brain breaks.
Thanksgiving is November 23rd this year. Plan some fun fall themed crafts and activities for your program. We love this “Thankful Puzzle Tree” idea for the classroom.

If you see a URL under the Activity Ideas section, that means the observance is listed on our Daily Holidays page! Visit that link (PDF includes clickable links) to find products and items that would work great for an activity.
We’ve also shared some specific ideas as a guide. For example, November 29th is National Square Dance Day – teach your group some fun square dances! Whether you are celebrating for your PE or rec program, classroom, or senior facility, this is such a fun idea for all ages. It gets your participants active, working together as a team, and learning movements. Here is a great video example:

The holidays and observances calendar is a great idea! My only issue is that it’s October 16th and my November calendar is already done. Is there any way to put them out a little earlier?

Hi Julie, at this time we are only able to create calendars for the holidays and observances in the United States. If you do an internet search for monthly holidays, you may find several helpful websites that include a list specifically for England. That is how we gather these holidays for our calendar.
